AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
The American Psychological Association (APA) is an organization of psychologists and other professionals in the United States of America dedicated to advancing the science, practice, and education of psychology. It is the largest psychological association in the world, with more than 115,000 members and affiliates. The mission of the APA is to advance the creation, communication, and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people’s lives.
History
The APA was founded in 1892 by a group of psychologists and educators in Worcester, Massachusetts. Initially, the group was called the American Psychological Association Committee on Psychological Research, but it was later changed to the current name. Since then, the APA has grown to become the largest organization of its kind, with members in all 50 states, Canada, and around the world.
The APA has been influential in the development of psychology as a science and profession. It has provided guidelines for research and ethical practice, as well as standards for professional development and certification. The APA also sponsors annual conferences, publishes journals, and provides resources for professional development and public education.
