AUDITORY TRAINING
Auditory Training for Hearing Aids: A Review
Introduction
Auditory training is a specialized practice that helps people with hearing loss to adjust to using hearing aids. It can involve a variety of methods, including various speech exercises, sound therapies, and listening drills. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the literature on auditory training for people using hearing aids and provide an overview of the available evidence.
Methods
A systematic review of the literature was conducted by searching the following electronic databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and ERIC. The search terms used included “auditory training”, “hearing aids”, “speech therapy”, “listening exercises”, and “sound therapy”. The search was limited to studies published in English from the past 10 years.
Results
A total of 18 studies were identified that met the inclusion criteria. The studies included a variety of different approaches to auditory training, including auditory discrimination and recognition exercises, listening drills, sound therapies, and speech exercises. Overall, there was evidence to suggest that auditory training can improve speech understanding in noise, word recognition, and overall listening ability for people using hearing aids.
Conclusions
The findings of this review suggest that auditory training can be beneficial for people using hearing aids. It appears that auditory training can improve speech understanding in noise, word recognition, and overall listening ability for people with hearing loss. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of auditory training and to determine the optimal approaches for different types of hearing loss.
