National Science Foundation (NSF): Supporting Innovation in Science and Education

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense. The NSF’s mission is to “promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense.” To this end, the NSF provides funding for research and education in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering.

Since its inception in 1950, the NSF has invested over $5 billion in research and education, making it the largest public funder of basic research in the United States. The NSF funds projects in a wide range of disciplines, from astronomy to zoology, and from mathematics to computer science. The NSF also provides support for a variety of programs and activities, such as scientific and engineering education, research facilities, and instrumentation.

The NSF is committed to advancing science as a vehicle for economic growth and national security. To this end, the agency funds projects in fundamental science and engineering, as well as in emerging areas such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, and information technology. The NSF also works in partnership with other government agencies, universities, and the private sector to foster innovation and accelerate technology development.

In addition to supporting research, the NSF is committed to enhancing science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (SMET) education. The NSF provides funding for a variety of programs, from elementary and secondary school science and mathematics education to post-secondary STEM education. The NSF also funds innovative programs that help develop the next generation of scientists and engineers. These include programs such as the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), which allows students to participate in cutting-edge research projects, and the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP), which provides support for talented students pursuing graduate degrees in science and engineering.

The NSF is dedicated to supporting and enabling science and engineering research and education. Through its investments in research and education, the NSF is helping to ensure that the United States remains at the forefront of scientific and technological innovation.
