PHONICS

1. a way of teaching reading, commonly known as sounding out, which is based upon the noises of the letters in a term instead of on the term as a whole, that being, trying to match phonemes and graphemes. Commonly referred to as phonic technique. 2. a previous terminology for acoustics.
