Self-Definition: How to Architect Your Authentic Identity

Self-definition is the process of constructing an identity based on one’s self-perceptions, experiences, and beliefs (Cross, 2011). People form self-definitions in order to make sense of the world around them, and to understand how they fit into it. Self-definition is important for developing a sense of security, self-esteem, and purpose (Bruch, 2013). Through self-definition, an individual can learn to accept and celebrate their unique qualities, and gain confidence in their ability to make decisions and take action (Cross, 2011).

The process of self-definition generally begins in childhood and continues throughout life, as people gain new experiences and develop new perspectives (Cross, 2011). As individuals grow, their self-definition may be impacted by various external factors, such as family, culture, peers, and media (Cross, 2011). While these influences can be powerful, individuals can also choose to define themselves in a way that is distinct from what is expected of them (Cross, 2011).

The ability to effectively define oneself is an important life skill, yet it can be difficult to develop (Bruch, 2013). People may struggle to understand their own values and beliefs, and may become overwhelmed by the task of constructing an identity (Bruch, 2013). It is helpful to seek support from friends, family, and professionals who can provide guidance and validation as one navigates this process (Bruch, 2013).

Self-definition can be an ongoing process of self-exploration and growth (Cross, 2011). It is important to remain open to new perspectives and experiences, and to be willing to adjust one’s self-definition as necessary (Cross, 2011). Establishing and maintaining a sense of self-definition can provide individuals with a deep sense of meaning and purpose, and can help them to lead more fulfilling lives (Cross, 2011).
