Mental Health: An Overview

Mental health is a complex and multifaceted concept that encompasses an individual’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health is a broad topic, encompassing many different areas of functioning, and is often seen as the foundation of a person’s overall health and wellbeing. Mental health is a state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual is able to cope with the normal stresses of life and interact effectively with others (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2020). The World Health Organization (2020) defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

Mental health is closely interconnected with physical health. The psychological and emotional aspects of mental health can affect physical health, and physical health can affect mental health (American Psychological Association, 2017). People with mental health conditions may experience physical symptoms, such as fatigue, headaches, or digestive problems, and people with physical health conditions may experience mental health symptoms, such as sadness, anxiety, or mood changes (American Psychological Association, 2017). Mental health is linked to many aspects of life, including work, relationships, physical activity, and diet (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2020).

Mental health conditions are common and can affect people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (2020), about one in five adults in the United States experience a mental illness in any given year. Depression is the most common mental health disorder, followed by anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2020). In addition, the World Health Organization (2020) estimates that approximately 450 million people around the world suffer from a mental health disorder.

Mental health is an important aspect of overall health and well-being. It is important to prioritize mental health and seek help for mental health conditions. Mental health treatment can include psychotherapy, medications, and lifestyle changes. Talk therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, can help people identify and address the underlying causes of mental health conditions (American Psychological Association, 2017). In addition, medications may be prescribed to treat symptoms of mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety (American Psychological Association, 2017). Lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a healthy diet, and adequate sleep, can also help improve mental health (American Psychological Association, 2017).
